What is Lip Vitiligo?

Lip vitiligo is a condition in which the skin of the lips loses its natural color. Many people with lip vitiligo develop white patches on their upper and lower lips. This can be cosmetically embarrassing and impact self-esteem. The condition is more common in people with a family history of vitiligo, but it can also occur for no known reason.

The immune system plays an important role in the development of lip vitiligo, but there are other causes as well. It’s also been suggested that lip vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that the body mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues.

Lip Vitiligo Symptoms:

In most cases, lip vitiligo affects only the skin of the lips. However, some individuals may also have depigmentation of the nearby skin or inside their mouths, especially those with a family history of vitiligo. Sometimes, hair loss or discoloration may be observed around the lips, especially if the condition is associated with other autoimmune disorders.

The most common symptoms of lip vitiligo are:

Depigmentation on the lips or around the mouth

White spots in the skin that grow bigger over time

Discolored patches of skin around the lips, mouth, and nose

Hyperpigmentation on the upper lip after stopping treatment

Patches of skin become lighter over time

Depigmentation of parts of the tongue or inside the mouth

Lip Vitiligo Treatment :

There are different treatment options available for lip vitiligo. These include topical corticosteroids, topical immunomodulators and surgical methods like autologous skin grafts and dermabrasion

The common treatment for the lip vitiligo includes:

Surgical procedures: Dermabrasion and split-thickness skin grafting for the lips can be done for the patients with active disease who are nonresponsive to medical management

Medical therapy: Topical corticosteroids are used in the lip vitiligo but in most of the cases, it does not respond well to medical therapy.

Other treatments: Excimer laser, PUVA (psoralen plus ultraviolet A) and surgical procedures such as melanocyte transplantation have been tried in patients with lip vitiligo with varying success.

Best Treatment for Lip Vitiligo : The cosmetic procedure, also known as lip tattooing, can restore shape and color to lips that have lost definition and pigment because of aging or medical conditions. Lip micropigmentation can also correct asymmetry and add fullness to lips that are overly thin.

The results are subtle, meaning that the lip shading looks natural rather than overdrawn. Your lips will look enhanced, but not like you’ve had work done.

Although results aren’t permanent, lip micropigmentation lasts for several years before it needs a touch-up. This is another reason why it’s important to find a certified technician who has been trained in the latest techniques.
